Del Toro abandoned the family business (both his parents and godmother were lawyers) when he changed majors then quit college to pursue acting. Mumbling through The Usual Suspects with Kevin Spacey and gaining 40lbs. to play drug-crazed Hunter S. Thompson's lawyer in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas led to an Oscar for 2000's Traffic. And his dad worried there was no future in acting.
